PRELUDE WORDS OF WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION based on Luke 22:14-16 * CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Tonight we come to conclude our journey of Lent, Unison: that leads us to stand beneath the cross of Jesus. Leader: Tonight we come to hear again of those events that brought Jesus to that cross, Unison: and to remember that he suffered and died there for us. Leader: Tonight we come to celebrate what it means to us to call Jesus, our dearest friend, Unison: and in humility to offer to him our thanks and praise. * HYMN OF THE CROSS OF JESUS (see insert) Passion Chorale “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” * LITANY SEEKING GOD’S GUIDANCE Leader: Gracious God, in love you have given us the gift of Jesus. Unison: Help us to know your love in our lives again this night. Leader: Gracious God, your Son Jesus gave new meaning to the Passover meal as a way to remember Him. Unison: Tonight, as the bread is broken and as the cup is shared, help us to remember Him. Leader: Gracious God, your Son Jesus was faithful in doing your will even to the point of death on the cruel cross. Unison: Help us always to be grateful for his faithful obedience. Leader: Gracious God, your Son Jesus prayed from the cross that even those who had treated him so cruelly may be forgiven. Unison: Help us to know your forgiving grace this night and always. Amen. * PREPARATION FOR MOVING TO THE MEAL IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL As you enter the fellowship hall please pick up your drink of water or sweet tea from the kitchen window, and then take a seat. The food will be on the table. There are no reserved seats. THE SHARING OF THE MEAL TOGETHER The meal tonight is typical of that which would have been shared by Jesus and his disciples. It consists of Fish, Bitter Greens, Fruit, Root Vegetables, Cheese and Unleavened Bread. JESUS BLESSES, BREAKS AND SHARES THE BREAD Luke 22:19 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING OVER THE BREAD THE SHARING OF THE BREAD TOGETHER On each table there is a loaf of unleavened bread. The person sitting closest to the bread is invited to break off a piece, and to pass the plate and the bread to his or her right, and let it come around the table. Everyone should plan to eat the bread when ready to do so. Please use the remainder of the loaf to share together during the rest of the meal. JESUS BLESSES AND SHARES THE CUP Luke 22:20 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING OVER THE CUP THE SHARING OF THE CUP TOGETHER On each table there is a tray of cups. The person sitting closest to the tray is invited to take a cup from the tray and then to pass it to his or her right, and let it come around the table. Everyone should plan to drink of the cup when ready to do so. PRAYER AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE MEAL Gracious God, as your Son Jesus first celebrated this meal he anticipated the events that soon would follow. Tonight we come to remember those events once again. As we reflect on each of these events help us to appreciate even more the love you have shown for us, and for the whole world, in Jesus Christ your Son, for it is in his name that we pray. Amen. There will be no benediction. The service will conclude on Easter morning. Appreciation is extended to Charlotte Hunter and those who have helped her for preparing our meal for us tonight. Donations to help cover the cost of tonight’s meal may be placed in the baskets on the tables. Any additional money will be placed in our One Great Hour of Sharing Easter Offering. Tonight’s celebration will conclude on Sunday morning: Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall from 9:30 until 9:45 a.m. The Celebration of the Joy of Easter for all Ages, which will include music, puppets and crafts will begin at 9:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall, and conclude with a group picture on the steps of the sanctuary, the decorating of the flower cross in front of the sanctuary, and the annual Easter Egg Hunt. At 11 a.m. we will celebrate in Word and Music “our sharing in the Victory of Jesus through baptism” with special Easter anthems of “Crown Him with Many Crowns” and “Majesty” by our choir, and Easter hymns for the congregation. At this service the members of the Confirmation Class, Erin Christopher, Emily Fuqua, Branham Skipper and Connor Ward, will make their Professions of Faith, other new members will be introduced and everyone will have the opportunity to remember his or her baptism. The Covered Dish Luncheon which had been discussed for Easter Day will not be held this year.
